  HISTORY OF THE SCHOONER RAILROAD

The schooner RAILROAD was a coastal freighter of sorts during the late 19th and the early 20th centuries which was owned and operated by David's great grandfather, Walter H. Merriman. Captain Merriman used to transport barrels of molasses and household goods to offshore islands and coastal communities.

THE RAILROAD AS PASSENGER SHIP
This advertisement depicts the RAILROAD as part of Camp Casco which was a boys camp on Casco Bay. Once or twice per season, Captain Merriman would load up the schooner with children from the summer camp and take them for a "cruise" as far downeast as Eastport.
